East African organic products standard
& mark launched
Project - Organic Standards East Africa (OSEA)
The East African Organic Conference was held in Dar es Salaam 28 May – 31 May 2007. Gunnar Rundgren (CEO), Eva Mattsson and Peter Lustig from Grolink were present at the conference. The East African organic products standard and the associated East African Organic Mark were launched during the conference.

The aim of the conference was achieved by creating a dialogue between decision makers, development cooperation partners and the public for the development of an action plan to take the organic agenda forward in the region. The current phase of the project is almost over. Remaining activities are oriented to consumer awareness activities. A follow up project is under development
Quoting the scope of the East African organic products standard:
“This East African Standard provides requirements for organic production. It covers plant production, animal husbandry, and bee-keeping, the collection of wild products, and the processing and labeling of the products therefrom. It does not cover procedures for verification such as inspection or certification of products.”
The conference was organized by:
- UNEP-UNCTAD Capacity Building Task Force on Trade, Environment and Development (CBTF), a joint initiative of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
- International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM)
- Tanzania Organic Agriculture Movement (TOAM), and
- Export Promotion of Organic Products from Africa (EPOPA)
In cooperation with:
- Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Cooperatives, United Republic of Tanzania
- Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and
- International Trade Centre (UNCTAD/WTO)
The conference was supported by:
- The European Union, and
- Sida (Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency)
